DeKalb County police are investigating the death of a 27-year-old man who was shot by a masked assailant on Glenwood Road near I-285.

Yusuf Abdul Nelson of Decatur collapsed Saturday in front of Glenwood Flea Market after being shot outside the Chevron nearby, a police report said.

A witness said he feared something was about to happen when, around 5:20 a.m., he saw the victim and suspect walking toward each other.

Once the shooter, whose mask wasn’t described in detail, pulled a gun, the witness “took a step away from the action,” the report said.

He soon saw the shooter running away behind the Exxon across the road.

A DeKalb officer reported hearing three or four gunshots and then seeing Nelson collapsed in the road in front of the flea market. He was pronounced dead within the hour at Grady Memorial Hospital.

On Tuesday, police spokesman Lt. Lonzy Robertson said the motive for the shooting wasn’t clear. Also unclear was whether Nelson was specifically targeted.

The investigation continues.
