USDA Food and Nutrition Service Southeast Regional Office will partner with Fresh MARTA Market, Community Farmers Market, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Georgia Food Oasis-Atlanta, Georgia Wholesome Wave, Open Hand Atlanta, South West Atlanta Growers Cooperative and Organix Matters to help celebrate National Farmers Market Week at 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at MARTA Five Points Rail Station, 30 Alabama St. SW.

This National Farmers Market Week event is created to recognize the benefits farmers markets bring to local communities. As key components of strong local and regional food systems, farmers markets create marketing opportunities and improve profits for farmers and ranchers, build stronger community ties, and expand the local economy.

MARTA riders will have the opportunity to purchase competitively priced, locally grown produce, meet Atlanta urban farmers, watch food demonstrations and taste local food samples. The Atlanta Community Food bank will conduct screenings for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Childcare and Parent Services programs which offer childcare subsidies to some of Georgia’s neediest families. Shoppers can also use Georgia Fresh for Less, formerly SNAP 2-for-1. Under the program, every dollar spent at the market becomes $2 in goods for shoppers.
