A Marietta woman was killed Tuesday, and her passenger was critically injured, after the car she was driving turned into the path of an unmarked Marietta police SUV.

Evelyn Lyle, 88, was driving northbound on Powder Springs Road in a 1995 Oldsmobile Cierra when she failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned left into the path of a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Maj. Cliff Kelker, authorities said. The Explorer struck the right front quarter panel of the Cierra, Marietta police spokesman Officer David Baldwin said.

Kelker was not injured in the wreck, but Lyle and her passenger, 66-year-old Michael Lyle, were rushed to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, he said. Evelyn Lyle was pronounced dead at the hospital and Michael Lyle was listed in critical condition early Wednesday, Baldwin said.

The investigation is ongoing.
