The Marietta Police Department is one of 17 law enforcement agencies in the state to receive a Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety because of the city’s higher rate of speeding and impaired driving.
This H.E.A.T. grant is $83,300 to combat crashes, injuries and fatalities with year-round high visibility patrols, multi-jurisdictional road checks and sobriety checkpoints.
The money also will be used to increase seat belt use and educate the public about traffic safety and the dangers of driving under the influence.
GOHS Director Harris Blackwood said alcohol-related crash deaths account for 25 percent of traffic fatalities in Georgia.
Totaling $3.2 million for this year, H.E.A.T. grants are designed to assist Georgia jurisdictions with the highest rates of traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities based on impaired driving and speeding data.
