The Marietta warehouse destroyed by a May 23 fire housed highly flammable and toxic chemicals, including some linked to cancer and other health threats, an AJC examination found.

The fire has been linked to a fish kill downstream from the Amrep Inc. warehouse. And while authorities assured the public the night of the blaze that there was no threat from toxic air emissions, monitoring did not begin until hours after the fire was reported. That could be a vulnerability in protecting the public from industrial catastrophes, the AJC found.
