The possible drunk driver who fled from Snellville police and then wrecked died Thursday morning.

Thomas Alvis Jr., 61, hit 75 mph before he left the roadway and struck the guardrail Wednesday night. The Loganville man, who did not have identification, was traveling southbound on Scenic Highway near Henry Clower Boulevard, Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead told the AJC.

A caller reported a possible drunk driver, and officers stopped Alvis near the intersection of U.S. 78 and Scenic Highway, Whitehead said. Officers could tell Alvis was under the influence of alcohol, he said.

Alvis took off at about 45 mph and police gave chase with lights and sirens, Whitehead said.

"As he continued south, he started to accelerate," Whitehead said from the scene late Wednesday.

Officers stopped their pursuit when the man's speed hit about 65 mph. The man struck a barrier and hit a guardrail about a mile from where the pursuit began, Whitehead said.

The man was transported to Grady Hospital, where he later died.
