A man was shot in the leg early Monday after a man who offered him a ride tried to rob him, Atlanta police said.
The shooting happened before 5 a.m. on St. Charles Avenue in northeast Atlanta.
Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said Ralph Odom told officers he was walking home from a store when a man offered him a ride.
Odom “states that he first turned the offer down, but the male was persistent, so he agreed to the ride and got into the vehicle,” Jones said.
The victim told officers that the man turned into a neighborhood “and parked the vehicle to get out and urinate and once he got back into the vehicle, he locked the car doors and pulled a handgun and told the victim to give him his purse,” according to Jones.
Odom was able to get out of the vehicle, and he and the suspect struggled, Jones said.
“The victim was able to hit him with his shoe before he shot him and fled the scene,” Jones said.
She said Odom was in stable condition at Atlanta Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the left leg.
