A 31-year-old man who refused to drop a knife remained in serious condition Tuesday after being shot twice in the torso by Gwinnett County police officers, authorities said.

Officers were called to break up a fight between several men on Southern Woods Drive, off South Norcross Tucker Road near Tucker, around 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith said.

One of those fighting appeared intoxicated and was carrying a large kitchen knife, Smith said.

Officers repeatedly asked the man, identified as Mynor Ramirez, to drop the weapon, but he refused, Smith said.

When Ramirez raised the knife over his shoulder and advanced toward two officers, each officer fired a single shot at nearly the same instant, police said. Ramirez was taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to the torso and is expected to survive.

Ramirez will be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and will be transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center upon his release from the hospital, police said. Ramirez is also wanted for a probation violation from traffic offenses in Adel, in south Georgia.

The officers, whose names were not released, were not injured, Smith said. Both officers are on paid leave, per department policy following officer-involved shootings.
