A man accused of dousing his ex-girlfriend with gasoline and then setting her on fire made his first appearance before a judge Thursday and was ordered held without bond in Cobb County's jail.
The first appearance in court was only to confirm Morgan Elijah Yarbrough's identity, to read the felony charges against him and to rule on bond. He is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and first degree arson.
More than 24 hours earlier, police said, Yarbrough followed his girlfriend into the parking lot of a BP gas station and convenience store on Barrett Parkway at I-75. The woman, identified as Rachel Brokaw by Channel 2 Action News, was at one of the gas pumps when Yarbrough confronted her around 2 a.m. Wednesday. They were arguing "when he doused her with gasoline from one of the pumps and ignited it," Cobb police Sgt. Dana Pierce said.
Yarbrough allegedly drove off in a black 2007 Dodge Charger, leaving Brokaw severely burned, Pierce said Wednesday.
Yarbrough turned himself in to police around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Pierce said.
