As alleged crooks go, they don’t get much more bumbling than this.

Late Monday morning, an Athens-Clarke County police officer spotted a man sitting in a golf cart in the back of a moving pickup truck, and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver of the pickup refused to stop and continued driving at slow speeds, Athens-Clark County police Sgt. Tony Kincaid said.

“On Sunny Hills Drive, the driver sped up and turned onto Hidden Creek Drive,” Kincaid said. “The golf cart and the male rolled out of the rear of the truck.”

The man who was on the golf cart then fled on foot, as the officer continued to chase the pickup.

“The driver of the truck pulled behind a residence and got stuck in some mud,” Kincaid said. “He fled on foot but was arrested after a short foot pursuit.”

Police charged the pickup driver, 43-year-old Jeffrey Kelley, with reckless conduct, obstruction, fleeing and attempting to elude and possession of marijuana. The second man remains at large.

Investigators determined that the golf cart had just been stolen in nearby Madison County, Kincaid said.
