Inspired to assist the medical needs of the homeless and low-income families of Atlanta, Dr. Bill Warren left his private practice in Sandy Springs and opened the Good Samaritan Health Center. The mission became to help families have access to a healthcare home and receive full, comprehensive medical care.
Continuing its mission, Good Samaritan Health Center is hosting its fourth Back to School Clinic and Family Block Party on Saturday.
"The clinic and party is a way for us to reach out to the community to provide all the medical care for the children, and to also let them know that we are here year-round for medical needs," said Karen Rose, director of development and public relations.
The day will involve hearing, vision, and dental screenings as well as family activities. Additionally, in partnership with Piedmont Healthcare, adult medical screenings will also be available. The clinic will charge $10-25 for the screenings and vaccinations.
"A good education is crucial for our children and the well-being of our community. [With the Back to School Clinic], our children get a healthy start to the school year," said Warren.
With a full-time staff and the help of over 400 volunteers, Good Samaritan Health Center serves 25,000 patients a year.
The health center is always looking for volunteers to help with events, do administrative work in the clinic, or host fundraisers. Large groups are encouraged to collect and donate hygiene and newborn packets for patients.
"With these events and our services, the community is starting to count on us," said Rose. "So, there is something for everyone who wants to volunteer or give back to Good Samaritan,"
The clinic provides medical, dental, mental health, and health education services that include primary and specialty care to the homeless, unemployed, uninsured, and the working poor.
Volunteer pediatrician Dr. Jen Zubler added, "With events such as the Back to School day, you find that parents want for their children what they need. It is personally rewarding to be able to use your skills to help lift a community."

In Other News: On July 14, Starbucks Coffee Co. and the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta painted and delivered new furniture and school supplies to the Thomasville Recreation Center in Atlanta. Thomasville is a part of the Centers of Hope initiative designed to provide Atlanta's youth with safe, structured environments where young people can bolster their academic skills, engage in robust physical activities and develop character-building traits. The volunteerism is an ongoing effort of Starbucks' Global Month of Service held in April.
