Lilburn wants residents to feel free to use golf carts in Old Town. Under state law, licensed drivers may operate road-ready golf carts on city streets with a speed limit of 25 mph or less. Lilburn’s Main Street and most of its adjoining streets are zoned 25 mph. While no official action was taken this week at the Lilburn city council meeting, city leaders directed staff to come up with ways to improve safety and accessibility for golf carts.

The state requires golf carts operating on city streets to have a braking system sufficient for the weight and passenger capacity of the vehicle, including a parking brake and a reverse warning device when the golf cart is in reverse. Golf carts must also have a power switch that is inoperative when the switch is off or key is removed, head lamps, reflex reflectors, tail lamps, horn, rearview mirror, safety warning labels, and hip restraints and hand holds or a combination of the two.
