The Lawrenceville City Council voted 3 to 2 Wednesday to table a request by Georgia Gwinnett College to change the name of Collins Industrial Way to Grizzly Crossing.
Councilmembers Tony Powell and David Still voted in opposition of postponing a vote.
The action followed a public hearing with representatives of businesses along Collins Industrial Way speaking out against the name change. Among those opposed, Dr. Asif Taufiq, a surgeon with the Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 15 Collins Industrial Way, stated his business would face “substantial economic loss” from the cost to change the address on stationery, billboards, and the time associated with reporting a street name change to between 30 and 40 insurance boards.
When asked by the city council if businesses along Collins Industrial Way had been part of discussions regarding the name change, Georgia Gwinnett College Director of Government Relations Merri Brantley stated, “No, just faculty, staff and students.”
Brantley and GGC student Garrison Douglas spoke in favor of the name change.
