Gwinnett County firefighters battled a large fire late Friday morning that consumed a grocery store just east of downtown Lawrenceville.

At 10:45 a.m., flames were shooting through much of the roof of the El Arc Iris # 1 Supermarket.

The market is at the end of a small strip shopping center in the 200 block of East Crogan Street, Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

The business was closed at the time and there were no reports of injuries.

The fire gutted the interior and burned the roof off much of the building, rendering the facility and its contents a total loss for much of the business, Rutledge said.

In determining the cause of the fire, Gwinnett investigators are being assisted by an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is common practice in fires involving significant damage or a high-dollar loss, Rutledge said.

Investigators do not suspect foul play at this point, he said.
