The Lawrenceville City Council approved $15,233 Monday for the installation of a wall to create a fingerprinting room in the courthouse.
Currently Lawrenceville has to send defendants to the Gwinnett County Jail to be fingerprinted. The defendant is dropped off at the jail by an officer, and then has to find a ride back to city hall to retrieve their vehicle.
This takes the time of an officer to take the person to the jail and make sure they arrive in the right location for fingerprinting. In addition, it is inconvenient and time consuming for the defendant.
The council previously approved the purchase of a fingerprint machine for the court to provide this service. However, Georgia privacy laws require the fingerprint machine must be in a separate room.
Kevin Price Construction Inc., will install a wall, ceiling, paint, HVAC, electrical, and an entrance door for the fingerprinting room.
