Law enforcement scales back search for Lake Lanier boater

After looking for four days, officials said they are scaling back their search for a missing Lake Lanier boater, limiting their resources to shoreline sweeps.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources suspended their search for Jerry Kornmeier, 57, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and will stop using electronic equipment Thursday, officials say.

Hall and Forsyth county officials have also been searching since Saturday.

Kornmeier was reported missing Saturday near Cocktail Cove in Lake Lanier. His boat was found when officials arrived floating in open water.

Officials said the search had become difficult since the water is deep with standing timber on the bottom.

Sonars detected a target in open water Tuesday just outside Cocktail Cove, but it was not Kornmeier. No targets were found Wednesday.
