DeKalb County firefighters had their hands full Thursday morning trying to douse a large area of wooden pallets that caught fire in a field off Moreland Avenue.
The blaze that broke out before 9 a.m. at R&R Pallets on Thurman Road, off Moreland just inside I-285, was initially dispatched as a brush fire, Assistant Fire Chief Garret Smith said.
Smith told the AJC that responding firefighters found about three acres of pallets stacked several feet high on fire.
At one point, the flames were higher than the surrounding tree tops, Smith said.
The field was below the flight path for planes heading to and from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but Smith said the wind “has kept most of the smoke down to keep it from interfering with any flight patterns.”
As crews began to get a handle on the blaze, a tractor was brought in assist firefighters.
“We do have some deep-seated fires where some old pallets were piled up and rock and dirt put over top of them,” Smith said.
No injuries were reported.
