1 killed, 2 injured after driver swerves to avoid MARTA bus
One person was killed and two more were injured when a Lincoln car jumped a curb and plowed through a MARTA bus stop in north Fulton County Thursday.
The accident on the southbound side of Alpharetta Highway happened at about 5 p.m. and traffic was still being re-routed onto Woodstock Street at 7 p.m. as Roswell police investigated.
The bus stop was crushed, with half the supports missing under the green, metal-roofed building, the glass shattered and a metal bench flattened. A black metal garbage can had been knocked out of place when a woman in her 60s swerved to avoid hitting the back of as MARTA bus, Roswell police said.
A witness described the accident "like bowling," where the luxury car careened through the would-be MARTA passengers, throwing people to either side.
Danilo Martinez said he was nearby when he heard the accident and local businesses lost power. As he arrived at the scene, an ambulance was taking two people away, Martinez said.
One man being loaded into the ambulance said he couldn’t feel anything from his waist up.
“It looks very bad,” Martinez said, describing the yellow blanket wrapped around the man.
The woman driver, who police say in her 60s, swerved to avoid hitting the bus when it stopped. The car went off the road and hit the three people at the bus stop. Police said charges are pending.
Georgia Power was also on the scene at 7 p.m. evaluating the damage to a utility pole, which was struck after the car traveled through the covered bus stop.
