The Kennesaw City Council decided on Dec. 2 to approve a development plan for the new recreation center in Adams Park near downtown Kennesaw.

The recreation center is scheduled to open during the spring of 2021, according to Kennesaw Communication and Engagement Manager Becca Graham.

This first phase of the center will cost $4.6 million and be paid by the 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), she said.

Phase 1 includes one large auditorium that can be separated into two multi-use courts.

Those courts can be used for basketball, volleyball courts, pickleball, badminton, etc. as well as space for offices, storage, restrooms and a fitness area, Graham said.

Phase 2 would include a third multi-use court and a dedicated gymnastics space if the 2022 SPLOST is approved by the voters.
