The Johns Creek City Council rejected a proposed 170-unit active adult apartment community at the busy intersection of Medlock Bridge and Bell roads. NorSouth Development had sought rezoning to the community business category to accommodate the development. The company had also sought variances to zoning regulations on the required amount of landscaping and the maximum permitted height of the building.
The decision came after several speakers took issue with the density of the proposal and its potential impact on the area, saying that traffic would stack up heavily both at and near the 5-story development. Another speaker objected to restricting the property to 55- to 64-year-olds, saying the city needed more housing for millennials.
A city staffer pointed out that under the city’s comprehensive plan, active adult housing was appropriate for the area.
