The state will pay $93,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by four Hays State Prison inmates who said guards handcuffed them and then attacked them with batons  in 2010.

Southern Center for Human Rights, representing the inmates, said in the suit Miracle Nwakanma, Cornelius Spencer, Eric Towns and Gregory Haines suffered serious injuries in the attack, some so requiring surgery to repair the damage.

In 1997, the state settled another14 Hays State Prison inmates $140,000 for beatings they endured during a prison “shakedown” led by then-Commissioner Wayne Garner.
