An inmate was killed Saturday after being attacked by at least one other inmate at the Hays State Prison in northwest Georgia.
Spokesman Vernon Keenan of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the agency is trying to determine the motive for the attack and who was involved.
The slain inmate’s identity was not provided, pending notification of next of kin.
“The inmate died after having been assaulted by other inmates,” Keenan said. “We will not identify any of the perpetrators until we bring charges against them.”
Hays State Prison is in Trion and near LaFayette.
Last month, four inmates filed a federal lawsuit claiming guards punched, kicked, stomped and hit them with batons, inflicting injuries so serious that two were hospitalized and one of them had to have surgery.
The prisoners, who name 10 officers and two supervisors in the suit, want compensatory and punitive damages.
A Department of Corrections spokeswoman cited the agency’s policy of not commenting on pending litigation.
