The Atlanta Press Club on Tuesday inducted five Georgia journalists into its Hall of Fame.
The current and former journalists are former Channel 2 Action News anchor Monica Pearson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Margaret Mitchell, Atlanta Business Chronicle Publisher Ed Baker, political commentator Bill Shipp and Fox 5 Atlanta investigative reporter Dale Russell.
The Hall of Fame recognizes journalists for their lifetime achievements and high standards of journalistic integrity.
Pearson, an Emmy award winner, retired this year as a Channel 2 Action News anchor after a 37-year career. She was the first minority and first female to anchor the evening news in Atlanta.
Mitchell was a pioneering female journalist who began her career working for The Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine. She was best known, however, for her 1936 novel, “Gone With The Wind,” which was later turned into a blockbuster Hollywood movie before her death in 1949.
Baker, a former ad agency executive, has overseen the Chronicle’s growth into an influential business journal. He is also chief strategic officer of the publication’s parent company, American City Business Journals.
Shipp started his professional career with The Atlanta Constitution in the 1950s (later The Atlanta Journal-Constitution) and has been a noted journalist and political commentator ever since. He is also an author.
Russell has been an investigative reporter in Atlanta for 30 years. The TV reporter is a former newspaper and magazine writer, and a former radio reporter.
