Several hundred people gathered for a peaceful march and rally in Peachtree City Tuesday evening, carrying signs calling for racial justice and community unity in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.
The two-hour event, called the PTC March for Justice, was announced on Facebook and drew a diverse mix of students, families and individuals at 6 p.m. for a mile-long procession from The Avenue shopping center to City Hall. Police closed the eastbound lanes of Ga. 54 to let the marchers pass.
Once at City Hall, the group knelt for a moment of silence around the fountain plaza before more than a dozen men and women stood before the crowd and shared stories of their personal struggles with racism and sometimes the police. Fewer than a dozen police officers sat in the crowd and stood nearby but took no action.
Peachtree City Police Chief Janet Moon attended, as did Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb. County Commissioner Charles Rousseau was the only elected official who spoke to the group. Emilio De la Mora, a McIntosh High School alumnus who was among the event organizers, told the crowd, “Please don’t let this be the only thing you do. We need to change the minds of the people who are comfortable.”
