The Georgia State Patrol is looking for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a South Carolina man on I-20 in Newton County early Tuesday.

According to the State Patrol, investigators believe that William Clark Hildreph, 44, lost control of the Chevrolet Impala he was driving on I-20 eastbound at Alcovy Road around 2:25 a.m. and struck the median wall.

"This caused the vehicle to spin and come to rest facing west in the eastbound lanes," the State Patrol said in a statement.

Hildreph apparently got out of the Impala and was crossing the travel lanes on foot when he was hit by a red or burgundy sport utility vehicle. The driver of the SUV left the scene after the accident.

The State Patrol said the SUV was possibly a Ford Explorer, and may have damage to the front end and windshield. Anyone with information on the vehicle is asked to contact investigators at 770-464-1800.
