A high-speed chase that began in southeast Tennessee involving a murder suspect ended in Bartow County early Saturday with the man shooting himself, authorities said.

The unidentified suspect, driving a white Cadillac, reached speeds of up to 120 mph before being forced to stop near Lake Allatoona, according to Bartow Sheriff Clark Millsap.

The 80-plus-mile chase began in Hamilton County, Tenn.  Authorities, including the Georgia State Patrol, followed the suspect on I-75 southbound from Catoosa County eventually into Bartow County. The chase ended just before 3 a.m. after the suspect ran over tire puncture devices put out by Bartow deputies.

Interstate 75 was shut down partially for more than three hours due to the chase but later re-opened.

The suspect, wanted for a murder in Fort Campbell, Ky., shot himself and he was airlifted to a regional hospital, authorities said. His condition was not immediately known.
