Henry County officials confirmed that an administrative decision was made to remove former commissioner Gary Freedman’s name from several plaques on county facilities that were opened during his eight years in office from 1997-2004.

Freedman pled guilty to child molestation charges in the summer of 2017 just before his trial was to begin and received a 40-year sentence with eight years to serve in the state prison system. He must also register as a sex offender for life.

The list of facilities bearing his name along with other commissioners includes the county administration building, a park, a senior center, a judicial building and four fire stations. Officials said an outcry from citizens led to the decision to remove his name.
