The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted May 21 to approve an agreement to install automated speed detection cameras in school zones.

The cameras will provide built-in license plate recognition and also give police the ability to view the camera feed remotely in real time. A study last year in the Hampton, Locust Grove, Luella, Ola and Stockbridge school clusters revealed that in a single school day there were 3,214 motorists driving at least 10 miles per hour above the speed limit.

Also, 75 motor vehicle accidents were reported within these areas in the last year. There will be no cost to the county for the installation and maintenance of the cameras, which will be managed by an outside company that will be paid from funds collected as a result of the program, with 65 percent of the money collected going to the Henry County Police Department’s public safety initiatives.
