A Gwinnett County woman suffering from a rare flesh-eating bacteria may have to have her left hand amputated, her husband told Channel 2 Action News on Thursday.
Cindy Martinez, 34, stabilized earlier this week and was released from intensive care, but she is still in the hospital after nearly a month and a large discolored wound remains on her side, David Martinez said.
“She still isn’t in the clear, but she is stable,” he told the news station. “It’s motivation to see my wife and how much she’s even able to fight through this and survive.”
Martinez, a Gwinnett County police officer, said a fundraiser was set for Thursday night in Daniel Park. So far, donors on an online fund-raising page have contributed more than $59,000 to help the couple and their 5-year-old and 2-year-old children.
Doctors do not know how Cindy Martinez got the infection, a case of necrotizing fasciitis and myositis, her husband said. The infection has forced doctors to surgically remove dead muscle and tissue.
