The Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District is making sidewalk construction more environmentally conscientious by recycling torn up concrete and asphalt. The process prevents sidewalk construction materials from being contributed to static landfills.
The first sidewalk project going green will be Jimmy Carter Boulevard from Best Friend Road to Buford Highway. The CID will also make the intersections of Jimmy Carter and Best Friend Road, and Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Buford Highway more pedestrian friendly by adding pedestrian signals and upgrading the intersection to conform to ADA requirements.
CID contractor CurbTech Inc. takes the broken up concrete and dirt to Metro Green Recycling where it is swapped out for screened dirt needed for additional site prep. The concrete is then ground up into aggregate, to be used as the base layer for the new sidewalk. Once the site prep is done, CurbTech pours the sidewalk with concrete from green certified Thomas Concrete, which uses recycled materials in their mix.
