A Gwinnett County teenager knows he’s lucky to be alive.

“The tree was literally right on top of me,” Jonn Hubbard said Sunday afternoon. “I was waving and yelling at the same time.”

Hubbard’s grandmother was visiting, so the 18-year-old spent the night in a camper parked outside his family’s Lawrenceville home. But around 7:30 a.m., Hubbard’s father was watching television when he heard a loud crash and felt the ground shake. He ran outside to find a large tree on top of the trailer, nearly splitting it in half. His son was still inside.

“I’m here, dad,” Mac Hubbard heard his son say. “I could see his hand waving at me.”

Mac Hubbard worked quickly to pull his son out of the camper, amazing himself with his strength. Jonn Hubbard is hearing impaired, but he felt the impact of the tree falling, he said. And he could hear his dad trying to get to him.

“I’m not the strongest guy in the world, but I pulled him out of that trailer,” the father said. “It’s a miracle.

Somehow, Jonn, a Mountain View High School senior, escaped with only scratches. Later Sunday, a crew with chainsaws worked to move the tree from the camper, which was destroyed. Jonn Hubbard planned to sleep inside his family’s home Sunday night.
