Gwinnett teacher earns honors, cash

Dr. Aimee Burgamy, Gwinnett County's 2009 Teacher of the Year, has been selected as the first recipient of the Ron Clark Academy's "Great American Teacher" award, it was announced Tuesday.

Dr. Burgamy teaches fine arts at Trickum Middle and was one of five national finalists for the award. Thousands of educators were nominated for the honor, which recognizes innovative teaching strategies.

A team of national education leaders selected 20 semifinalists, and Clark and a team of judges observed Dr. Burgamy teaching during a visit to her classroom.

As part of the recognition, Dr. Burgamy will receive $10,000 cash, a $5,000 cash gift for Trickum Middle and several tools for her classroom.
