A campus police officer was allegedly struck and injured by a car driven by one student Thursday morning as he chased another student near Meadowcreek High School in Gwinnett County.

The officer, Chuck McCallum, was involved in a foot chase at the school when he was struck by Jarvis Ruff, 17, a Meadowcreek High student, according to Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith.

Ruff has been charged with hit-and-run, driving without a driver’s license, improper lane change, speeding, reckless driving, and failure to report striking a fixed object, Smith said.

The alleged hit-and-run occurred at the intersection of Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Windward Lane, about 100 yards from school property, Smith said.

The school officer had been chasing a student involved in some sort of incident at the school when Ruff allegedly struck the school officer and left the scene, Smith said.

Several students were assisting the injured school officer when police arrived. One of those students spotted the suspect’s car heading down Steve Reynolds Boulevard in the direction of Indian Trail Road. When Gwinnett police followed the car, Ruff attempted to turn left from Steve Reynolds Boulevard into a back entrance of the Indian Trail Apartment Homes at 1100 Indian Trail Road in Norcross, Smith said. He lost control and crashed through a stone sign at the entrance to the complex. The car went down a small, steep embankment and came to a stop in a wooded area, Smith said.

Ruff ran into the wooded area, and was caught after a brief chase, Smith said.

McCallum was taken from the scene in an ambulance. His injuries were non-life threatening, according to Smith.
