Gwinnett school officials have revised redistricting plans, redrawing boundaries for four of the five attendance zones marked for changes.
The alterations to the original proposals come after school district officials considered recommendations from parents and patrons at the affected schools, Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach said. Parents, whose children live in the affected areas, submitted more than 1,000 comment forms to the school district.
The redistricting proposal, set for fall 2010, relocates some 9,000 students in 29 schools as the district cuts back on trailers and draws boundaries for six new schools, five of them elementary schools. The Gwinnett school system, the largest in the state, has about 160,000 students.
The latest changes include adjustments to the boundaries in the South Gwinnett cluster, where a large contingent of parents in Snellville rallied to keep their children from being transferred from Magill Elementary to Britt Elementary. The revised map shows the Magill attendance area has been restored to its current boundaries.
A similar adjustment was made in Suwanee, where boundaries were redrawn to accommodate a portion of the Morningview neighborhood in the Suwanee Elementary attendance zone.
The new boundary maps, including a list of changes, are available on the school district's Web site, www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us/.
"This is a two-month process, and we're about halfway through," Roach said. "We've been able to listen and actually take some of the input we've received and proposed some additional changes to the maps that meet our goals of balancing enrollment."
Parents will have another chance to comment on and make recommendations to redistricting maps at a special public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in the boardroom at the Instructional Support Center, 437 Old Peachtree Road N.W., Suwanee.
