After more than 7 years of service, Gwinnett County Police K-9 Cody is retiring from the force.

“He’s had a long, productive career,” Gwinnett County Police Chief Charles Walters told county commissioners Tuesday.

Cody, now about 9 and 1/2 years old, has cataracts and a vet has determined that he’s no longer able to do his job, Walters said.

He’s being permanently retired to live out his life with his handler, Cpl. J.C. Bailey.

Gwinnett County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve Cody’s retirement.

“He’s an amazing animal,” Commissioner Lynette Howard said.
