A Gwinnett County police officer shot a man who was grabbing a gun from his waistband Thursday afternoon in the Lilburn area.

Officers on patrol on Worcester Place attempted to speak to two men, but they ignored the officers, Cpl. Jake Smith said. When an officer persisted, one of the men attempted to pull a gun and the officer fired, striking the man in the shoulder, Smith said.

The 24-year-old man, whose name was not released, was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene and taken in custody, Smith said. But his companion ran away and got into a dark-colored SUV driven by another person, police said.

The search continued for the suspect late Thursday, police said.

Officers were patrolling the area due to a string of recent burglaries in the area, Smith said. Since Aug. 1, 33 home burglaries have been reported in a 1-mile radius from the intersection of Worcester Place and Derby Court, he said.
