A Gwinnett County woman is a step closer to getting back home.

The family of Cindy Martinez spent time together for the first time since the woman started her battle against flesh-eating bacteria and received numerous amputations.

Martinez was recently moved from an intensive care unit in Augusta to a local rehab facility, which means she is weeks away from going home to her husband and two kids.

After several months, husband David Martinez was finally able to get their kids in to see their mother.

"I actually surprised her with the children," David Martinez told Channel 2's Wendy Corona. "I just want to make sure that we're together."

It was a visit David Martinez says they all needed. He reintroduced 6-year-old David and 2-year-old Bianca to their mother, who they haven't seen in two months.

"She says, 'Mom doesn't have feet,' and I tell her, 'She's going to have feet again, she'll get different feet," David Martinez said.

Now with Cindy Martinez in rehab, the countdown is on, just a matter of weeks, before she's home again.

"I feel that we are blessed. People have come together and provided us with a lot of prayers and donations as well and I'm grateful for that," David Martinez said.

Fundraisers throughout the metro area have provided a lot for the young family.

"It made me realize that I can actually call this place home," David Martinez said.

And so David Martinez wants to make home the most comfortable he can for his wife's return.

"The next step is for me to be able to put life back together for my wife, to be independent again, her having the things that she needs so she can live life," Martinez said.

And be an active mom alongside their two children.

"She did a lot, she still does and I know she still will, and I'm just glad that we were able to spend time together this weekend," David Martinez said.
