A 15-year-old Lanier High School student was charged last week after allegedly burning a classmate with hot tongs, according to school officials.

The incident happened in a science lab at the Sugar Hill high school Thursday, Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The male student, who was not identified due to being underage, was charged with battery on Saturday, Roach said.

According to a GCPS's incident report, the teen admitted to heating the tongs and then pressing them on the forearm of another student. The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

A juvenile complaint has been filed, but Roach did not have details on whether the student was in custody.

The student will not be allowed to return to the school until he faces a disciplinary review board at a later date, Roach said.
