Gun permit applications in DeKalb County spiked the week following the Orlando massacre.
Between June 13 and June 17 — the first full week after 49 people were shot and killed in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida — the DeKalb County Probate Court received 166 applications for gun permits, including new applications and renewals.
The prior week saw only 111 applications. Throughout May, an average of 114 applications were received each week.
The increase in gun permit applications is common in the metro Atlanta area after mass shooting events, and gun sales often see a rise, too. Channel 2 Action News reported Monday that one gun store in Cobb County was selling 15 AR-15s an hour. The store claimed it typically sells only four or five each week.
