Following a public hearing Monday, the Grayson City Council approved an amendment to allow the city council to approve zoning variances and special use permits under specific situations. In the past, applicants seeking a zoning variance were required to submit applications to both the council and the Zoning Board of Appeals. The amendment will allow the council to hear variances in limited circumstances so that two applications are not necessary.

The change brings the policy in line with other cities and counties that allow councils the authority to handle variances and special use permit requests. The council will now have the authority to approve zoning variances when the request is less intense, with or without conditions, deny or postpone requests. Interpretation and enforcement questions will first be presented to the administrative officer. These questions will be presented to the Board of Appeals only on appeal from the decision of the administrative officer.
