A Fulton County grandmother is accused of beating and sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl in her care.
Lorraine Grant, 41, turned herself in to Roswell police late Monday, Lt. James McGee said. She was booked into the Fulton County jail, where she was being held Tuesday without bond.
Investigators said the girl sustained cracked ribs, bruises and burns to her body while visiting Grant from California. The girl's mother flew to Atlanta from California when Grant stopped returning her calls, McGee said.
The mother, who was staying in a hotel near the airport, contacted East Point police after noticing what appeared to be burns or abrasions on the child, McGee said.
The child was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where X-rays revealed broken bones and medical personnel determined the girl had been abused, police said. East Point police contacted Roswell police because that is where the abuse allegedly occurred, McGee said.
Investigators searched Grant's Roswell apartment Sunday, but couldn't find the woman. After turning herself in, Grant was arrested and charged with child cruelty, sexual battery, aggravated assault and aggravated battery, jail records show.
