Avondale Estates’ much-discussed The Art Lot is finally having its grand opening 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at 70 North Avondale Road.

Project Manager Jen Singh said Thursday the day will feature food, music and drinks but also various artists will be on site finishing projects.

“We have the framing up and several pieces of sculpture,” Singh said. “I’d say it’s about as finished as it will possibly get. But then again, I think it will keep transforming from week to week.”

Singh says that plans for the immediate future include a silent film with music provided by an authentic Victrola phonograph. There’s also upcoming comedy improv, dance performances, chef demos and tastings and acoustic music.

The Art Lot received $6,000 from the city and $12,000 from the city’s Downtown Development Authority to get started. Mayor Jonathan Elmore has said any additional project funds must be raised by the Avondale Arts Alliance either through donations or grants.

Singh believes the Alliance will have access to the property for at least a year, or possibly longer, depending on how long it takes for the city to find a permanent developer.
