The real estate group owned by former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes has proposed a housing project that would span 46 acres of south Cobb County.
Records recently posted online show that the 157-home subdivision proposal by Barnes Land and Investments will be voted on at a July 6 zoning meeting.
Barnes, who has a longtime legal practice in Marietta, served as the state's 80th governor from 1999 to 2003. At the end of 2003, Barnes formed the real estate group, according to state business records.
The single-family homes would be built between Clay Road and Veterans Memorial Highway, according to the application.
The proposal says the area has “aging home and infrastructure but is an area which is poised for high-end residential development.” The units would be between 2,500 and 3,500 square feet.
Garvis L. Sams, Jr. — a Marietta attorney representing the project’s developer Josh Thompson — said Tuesday that renderings should be available in a week or so.
The property is now zoned to support 101 homes instead of the proposed 157, which is why the project is coming before the zoning board.
He said the price of the homes will start at about $300,000.
If the project passes through the zoning board, Cobb County commissioners would consider it during their July 18 meeting.
