Georgia Tech won a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy Thursday as part of a series of projects that federal officials said have the potential to change the way we produce and use energy.

The energy department will award $106 million to support 37 projects that "could produce advanced biofuels more efficiently from renewable electricity instead of sunlight; design completely new types of batteries to make electric vehicles more affordable; and remove the carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants in a more cost-effective way," according to a news release.

The grants were awarded to businesses, laboratories, large corporations and educational institutions, such as Georgia Tech.
