Georgia Tech researchers will try to improve Internet transparency through a $1 million award from Google.

Researchers will develop tools that can be accessed for free to determine if governments are tampering with what users read or send.  Studies show about 60 countries censor access.

Should the Internet go down in a particular country, people would know if a government or other group is blocking traffic, tampering with search results or altering information to spread propaganda, said Wenke Lee, a computer science professor working on the project.
