The GBI has joined the search for the killer of a cab driver who was fatally shot Sunday in East Point.

"Assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene unit was requested and agents from the GBI are actively assisting East Point Police Department detectives with this investigation," East Point police said in a statement.

The statement said investigators are pursuing "strong leads" in the case.

Jack Rainey, 49, was an employee of Day & Night cab company. Dispatchers there say Rainey, the father of three children, called to report being shot at 4 a.m., but his radio immediately went silent.

Police searched for the cab for hours before a woman called to report finding Rainey in his cab at the entrance to Oak Knoll Elementary School, said East Point police Lt. Cliff Chandler

Rainey had been shot multiple times, probably from inside the cab, police said.

“The call was [from] Charleston Apartments," cab dispatcher Joe Darin told Channel 2 Action News. "We get a lot of calls there, but we don't know whether he had picked up the call he was assigned to or he picked up a flag which we call on the street,” Darin said. “What can I tell you, we hadn't lost a driver in a while. He had three kids, one in college and two youngsters, 11 and 9.”

At this time no motive has been determined and no suspects have been taken into custody.

Anyone with information concerning the shooting are asked to call 404-559-6284 or 404-559-6300. Callers may remain anonymous, police said.
