Holiday travelers getting an early start on the roads Monday found metro Atlanta gas prices averaging a nickel a gallon higher than one week ago, but about the same as last year.
Metro Atlanta’s average price for a gallon of regular unleaded early Monday was $3.24, up from $3.19 last Monday, according to atlantagasprices.com, a website that monitors the cost of filling up.
The average price a year ago was $3.26.
The lowest prices reported by the website early Monday were $2.99 at a Sunoco station in Lovejoy and between $3.04 and $3.08 at numerous metro Atlanta warehouse clubs.
The state’s rock-bottom price was $2.96 at a station in Rossville near the Tennessee state line.
Travelers headed to neighboring states and looking for a deal will find many stations selling regular unleaded for around $2.99 in Alabama, while several stations along I-85 in South Carolina had gas priced at $2.89 early Monday. In Tennessee, meanwhile, gas was going for between $2.90 and $2.95 at dozens of stations statewide.
One thing Georgia motorists won’t have to worry about later this week is wasting gas while sitting in traffic caused by road construction.
The state Department of Transportation has suspended lane closures on interstates and major state routes, beginning at noon Wednsesday and extending through 9 p.m. Sunday.
