A major thoroughfare in Cumming reopened Wednesday morning after a gas main break shut it down overnight, Forsyth County officials said.

A 6-inch gas line pipe was breached at the intersection of Matt Highway and Pooles Mill Road, Forsyth sheriff’s Deputy Doug Rainwater said in a release. The road was first shut down about 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. Homes in the area were evacuated.

Roads reopened about 6 a.m. Wednesday.
