Signing day for athletes is a dream come true. Guts twist and turn as they await the future of their careers as it all comes down to one single moment.
Ten student-athletes of the Greater Atlanta Christian School experienced this exciting moment as they would have lifetime opportunities to showcase their talents, determination and commitment on the collegiate level.
“All the parties, events, hangouts and other activities I didn’t go to – it was all worth it for this moment,” said former GAC athlete Kennedy Tolson, a soccer player who signed to play for the University of Maryland, which has one of the largest theater programs on the East Coast.
At GAC character matters as much as academic performance. Students are required to complete service hours with many going above and beyond the minimum required.
The class of 2018 has completed nearly 20,000 service hours during their high school career. From local mission trips around Atlanta to neighboring states around Georgia, to places abroad, like Honduras, they spend holidays and school breaks helping others miles away from their families.
Just this school year, nearly 400 students served in locations like Jekyll Island, North Carolina and Puerto Rico, with more trips scheduled for spring semester.
“This will be my fourth year going on the Honduras mission trip,” said Josh Rose, who signed with the University of Utah to play lacrosse.
Going through nonprofit agencies like Honduras Outreach Inc., the group helps small villages with manual labor, such as laying concrete flooring and building in-door bathrooms in village houses. “I have learned so many life lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Rose’s teammate Peter Klueber earned a scholarship to Mercer. “ I have always dreamed of playing at the next level ever since I picked up a LaCrosse stick. It feels amazing signing,” he said, surrounded by his friends and family.
