According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV, and nearly 1 in 8 do not know they are infected.

Georgia is ranked fifth in the nation for the number of persons living with HIV, and two-thirds live in the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area.

“One of the most alarming statistics surrounding HIV is the fact that so many don’t know they are infected,” said Rachel Franklin, director of epidemiology at Cobb & Douglas Public Health.

“We want to help the community understand that you can live happy, healthy lives even with HIV thanks to advances in treatment; but knowing your status and getting into care are the first steps you have to take,” she added. “Holding events like these helps reduce barriers for the community to take that crucial first step.”
